The Philippines hosts AsianSIL’s 7th Biennial Conference, international law experts convene in Manila

The 7th Biennial Conference of the Asian Society of International Law will be held in Novotel Manila Araneta Center in Quezon City, Philippines from 22 August to 23 August 2019. The Conference is hosted by the Asian Society of International Law and co-sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, the Philippine Society of International Law, the University of the Philippines College of Law and the UP Law Center.

This year’s conference theme is “Rethinking International Law: Finding Common Solutions to Contemporary Civilizational Issues from an Asian Perspective.”

The two-day global conference will include an opening session, over 40 plenary and parallel sessions addressing a wide range of topics in international law, and a closing session. A Junior Scholars’ Conference will also be held at the University of the Philippines College of Law on the eve of the biennial gathering on 21 August 2019.

An estimate of over 400 delegates from Asia and all over the world – including judges of various international law tribunals, international law academics and researchers, lawyers, and graduate students – are expected to attend the Society’s 7th Biennial Conference.

His Excellency Judge Yuji Iwasawa of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), a notable academic and chair of the UN Human Rights Committee prior to his stint at the ICJ, will deliver the keynote speech.

The Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL) is an international forum for scholars and practitioners of international law. It promotes research, education and practice of international law by serving as a centre of activities in Asia and elsewhere. It fosters and encourages Asian perspectives of international law and promotes awareness of and respect for international law in Asia.

AsianSIL is comprised of regional chapters and national societies from all over Asia, which includes the Philippine Society of International Law (PSIL). The current AsianSIL President is former Secretary Harry L. Roque, while the Philippine Society is headed by University of the Philippines (UP) Professor Elizabeth Aguiling-Pangalangan.
