Cisco is helping the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) improve cybersecurity in the Philippines by training networking professionals to identify and respond to various cyber threats, the company’s Philippine head said on Wednesday.

The Philippines is a magnet for online threats, landing as among the top five countries in the world in terms of internet-borne attacks, Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky said.

The Philippine National Police – Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) said it will strengthen its cyber patrol operations to go after websites used for promoting violent extremism.

Data breaches in the Philippines show no sign of slowing down. In the second half of the year, cybersecurity enthusiasts from government and private sectors are sharing data and ideas to lessen the impact of these breaches.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) took a major step in harmonising regional data protection, privacy regulations and initiatives by launching the first ASEAN Data Protection and Privacy Forum in Bangkok, Thailand, with the Philippines at the helm.
