China’s Ambassador to the Philippines on Monday criticized the communication sent by former Philippine officials to the International Criminal Court (ICC) against him, Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chinese Foreign Minister.

The ICC has received more than 52 communications accusing the Duterte administration of crimes against humanity over the brutal crackdown on narcotics, which has left more than 5,000 people dead, according to police data.

AS an international treaty, the Rome Statute is powered by the consent of States, a fundamental principle of international law. Moreover, its whole normative framework is built on respect for State sovereignty, the cornerstone of international law and the guiding principle behind peaceful international relations, as recalled by the UN Charter itself.
