UP Law Community Women’s Month Commemoration Activities 2023
The University of the Philippines College of Law and its student organizations have organized several events to celebrate International Women’s Month and promote gender equality and women empowerment.
The UP Institute for Human Rights (UP IHR) organized a forum entitled “The Post-Pandemic State of Women’s Rights in the Philippines.” Emphasizing the gaps in Philippine laws in the digital age, it became an avenue for women and advocates to brainstorm solutions for gender-based problems that have continued and expanded to cyberspace.
Within the college, the Office of the Associate Dean encouraged the UP Law Center to wear Purple on Wednesdays of March to signify support for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
As part of the DigitALL: Innovation & Technology for Gender Equality campaign, the UP Law Complex also had a poster-making exhibit contest last March 29 to 30. Members of the staff and offices were allowed to vote for their favorite entry.
UP Women in Law (WINLAW) joined the call through a social media campaign. They launched “#EmbraceEquity,” which stands for challenging gender stereotypes, calling out discrimination, and pushing for positive change.
UP WINLAW and UP Portia Sorority also participated in “The Sunflower Run: Pagpupugay sa Kababaihan, Pag-Asa para sa Kabataan.” This event celebrated women’s strength and resilience. A symbol of unity, the event was a tribute to women who are victims of violence, abuse, sexual harassment, and exploitation.
To empower women by destigmatizing the issue of women’s health, UP Portia Sorority gathered their residents and alumnae to discuss reproductive, perimenopausal, and menopausal health. They invited experts in Obstetrics and Gynecology to speak on the matter. The event became a safe space for women to speak out and ask about the many concerns surrounding their health.
The events organized by the UP College of Law and its student organizations aim to celebrate women’s achievements and contributions while promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. Through these events, they hope to inspire and empower the next generation of women to break barriers and make a positive change in society.
