PROFILE

Professor Casis received his LL.M from Columbia University in 2010, specializing in International Law, Climate Change Law and Environmental Law. He earned the distinction of being a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar (magna cum laude equivalent). A member of the Order of the Purple Feather, UP Law’s honor society, for all his years in law school, he graduated in the top ten of his class, receiving the Dean’s Medal for Academic Excellence. He also received other distinctions upon graduation, including the Maria Clara Lopez Campos Prize for Best Paper in Commercial Law, champion of the national rounds, and being one of the ten best oralists in the world during the international rounds of the Philip Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and being the overall champion of the Asia Cup International Law Moot Court Competition. He has been teaching at UP Law since 2005 and became a full-time faculty member since 2008. As a working law student, he was a researcher for the Institute of Government and Law Reform and the Institute of International Legal Studies of the UP Law Center.

Before joining the full-time faculty, Professor Casis was an associate in the Manila office of Baker & McKenzie and was engaged in the corporate law practice for six years for high-profile clients. His practice generally revolved around mergers and acquisitions, foreign investment structuring, real estate, and property transactions, and corporate governance and compliance.

Professor Casis has four law treatises (i.e., on Agency, Partnership, Damages, and Torts) published by the University of the Philippines. His fifth book, titled “The Law on Contracts,” was published by Lexis Nexis in 2016. He recently co-authored a book with Ambassador Malaya of the Department of Foreign Affairs titled “Treaties: Guidance on Practices and Procedures.” He is also the editor of several other books, the most recent being a volume on Asian Comparative Law. He has also published articles and papers appearing on the Asian Yearbook of International Law and the Philippine Yearbook of International Law. He also has his papers published in the Philippine Law Journal, the Ateneo Law Journal, the IBP Journal, and the World Bulletin.

Professor Casis teaches International Environmental Law and Policy in the LL.M Program of the University of the Philippines and Public International Law in the J.D. Program. He also teaches Obligations and Contracts, Torts and Damages, and Supervised Legal Research.

In addition to teaching full-time, Professor Casis is the Director of the Institute of International Legal Studies of the University of the Philippines Law Center (IILS). As Director of the IILS, he is involved in and supervises various research projects involving international law, including but not limited to International Environmental Law, International Humanitarian Law, International Trade Law, and most recently, Space Law. He is also the Managing Editor of the Asia-Pacific Journal of International Humanitarian Law and editor of the Philippine Yearbook of International Law. He also serves as Executive Director of the Philippine Society of International Law. Professor Casis also serves as faculty adviser to the moot court teams of the College of Law, including the Jessup, Stetson, Asia Cup, IHL, Price, and Jackson Moot Court teams. As the adviser, he has steered a number of these teams to championships locally and internationally.
