Prof. Tiu participates in Study Visit to Australia as Legal Consultant of UNODC on Counterterrorism and Human Rights
On 19 – 23 June 2023, Prof. Tiu joined delegates in the Study Visit to Australia for the Members of the Philippine Judiciary focusing on the treatment of Terrorism and Terrorism Financing Cases by Australia’s judicial system and court processes. The Study Visit had taken the delegates to the different courts of Australia and its criminal justice agencies to promote comprehensive understanding and wider perspectives on the full criminal justice cycle as it relates to addressing terrorism and violent extremism offences.
The Philippine delegation was led by Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo, Senior Associate Justice Marvic Mario Victor F. Leonen, and was composed of Associate Justices of the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals, and judges of designated Anti-Terror Courts. The delegates also included Chief Justice Reynato Puno (Ret.) and PHILJA Chancellor Justice Rosmari Carandang (Ret.).
Prof. Tiu is a legal consultant of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime in the area of counterterrorism and human rights. He conducts analysis of laws, regimes, and other instruments, and provides advice and recommendation to ensure that the Philippine legal framework on counterterrorism is consistent with international human rights standards and constitutional rights protections.
