The Stetson International Environmental Moot Court Competition (“Stetson”) held in Gulfport, Florida is the most prestigious international environmental law competition which focuses on important global environmental challenges. Since 1996, law students from universities all over the globe have participated in the competition. The Stetson promotes environmental awareness by bringing together law students to discuss exciting environmental law issues which are very much relevant in our world today. This year, the competition focuses on sea turtle protection and cultural practices. Stetson participants will get to defend both sides of a fictional problem as counsel for countries before the International Court of Justice.
In order to qualify for the Stetson International Finals in Florida, participants must compete regional competitions. This year, the Southeast Asian Regional Rounds (“SEARR”) of the Stetson will be held in the Philippines on December 19-21, 2013. Countries in the ASEAN composed of Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Brunei, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Philippines are required to participate in the SEARR.
The SEARR will be hosted by the Institute for Maritime Affairs and the Law of the Sea (“IMLOS”) of the University of the Philippines (“UP”) Law Center. IMLOS, inaugurated March of this year, is the newest academic research institute under the UP Law Center. IMLOS, which is composed of experts in the field of maritime law, specializes on policy research services for both public and private maritime industries. This exciting new partnership between Stetson and UP IMLOS seeks to provide a dynamic competition for law students in the region in the hopes of establishing a more environmentally aware Southeast Asia.
