Prof. La Viña: Lessons in Impeachment
"An angry president can unleash all his powers, including use his bully pulpit,
his control of Congress, and all the resources of the executive branch
to go after sitting impeachable officials."
Lessons in Impeachment
Professor Tony La Viña continues his series on the impeachment efforts of the Lower House against the Chief Justice in his column ‘Eagle Eyes' (Manila standard, October 10, 2017). The good Professor laments misuse of this political exercise pointing to how a “President-led impeachment erodes the independence of the judiciary, the Ombudsman, and the constitutional commissions.” La Viña bemoaned the precedent set by the previous administration with the “decision of President Noynoy Aquino to have Chief Justice Corona impeached in 2012, done overnight out of anger.”
