UP Law Centennial 1911-2011

The University of the Philippines College of Law is on the eve of one of its most momentous occasions - the celebration of its one hundred years of existence. Since its establishment in 1911, UP Law has consistently made significant contributions to the country's top social and political leaders. It has continuously been the premier law institution providing quality legal education to the country's scholars and pioneering legal and policy research and development.

Indeed, the past century in Philippine history has seen an abundance of UP Law graduates who have helped shape the country's social and political arena. Malcolm Hall has borne a number of presidents, vice presidents, senators, congressmen, judges and Justices of the Supreme Court, proving the College's commitment to academic excellence and public service.

For this reason, President Benigno S. Aquino III declared 2011 as the "University of the Philippines College of Law Centennial Year." The entire UP Law community, along with its alumni, will celebrate 100 years of excellence in law, with various Centennial activities, prepared and organized by the UP Law Centennial Commission, set to officially begin January 2011 as UP Law Celebrates its centennial month. The Centennial Celebration has been given the theme, "The College of Law and the Challenges to Philippine Law at the Beginning of its Second Century."

This important commemoration, in the words of UP Law Dean, Marvic M.V.F. Leonen, is "not only to celebrate UP Law's distinctive history, but also to renew the institution's commitment as the country's bastion of legal education and research." This occasion indeed serves both as a celebration and as a challenge to the College to continue its excellence in teaching law in the grand manner and to further surpass its long of achievements for the next one hundred years.
