IHR ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON BRIDGING THE RACIAL DIVIDE
The UN General Assembly has declared 2015-2024 as the International Decade for People of African Descent. UP Law Center’s Atty. Ricardo A. Sunga III who is a Law Reform Specialist in the Institute of Human Rights (IHR) presented a paper during a roundtable discussion held on June 15, 2016. Speaking to an intimate gathering of representatives from different government agencies, Atty. Sunga discussed the topic “Bridging the Racial Divide: Contemporary Issues of Discrimination.” Hon. Loretta Ann ‘Eta’ Rosales, Philippine Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights, graced the event and served as a reactor along with Atty. Banuar Reuben Falcon of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR).
As Chair Rapporteur of UN Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent, Atty. Sunga is involved in the Program of Activities for the Implementation of the International Decade and his paper is part of a larger work on monitoring the rights of people of African descent and considering issues of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, Afrophobia, and related intolerance.
